I just found a wonderful resource an online tool that helps you calculate your daily nutritional needs. Based on your gender, age, ht, wt, activity level it helps calculate your Daily Recommended Intake needs for macronutrients (e.g. fat, protein, fiber), vitamins and minerals. It also calculates your BMI and daily calorie intake need.
Check it out here!
Thanks to the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine for creating such a great tool. Tell me about your results? Were you surprised by anything?

Why compost a fifth of your garbage?
Putting less trash on the curb reduces the amount of fuel required to haul it away. Plus, composting provides a way not only of reducing the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of, but also of converting it into a product that is useful for gardening, landscaping, or house plants.

Re-Usable Bags - Product Guide
I was at the doctor's office the other day and met a mother and her son. The son was happily snacking some nuts and dried fruit from a great re-usable bag. The mother told me she had tried many, many different bags/containers and these were by far her favorite and the easiest to use (she puts them in a mesh bag and tosses them into the washing machine to clean).

Why Recycle Newspapers and Magazines
Americans throw away more paper than any other kind of trash. Recycling the pounds of magazines and newspapers the average household accrues in a year not only saves trees but also reduces contributions to air pollution by 95%.
Saves 581 pounds of COs per person per year which if everyone in the US recycled their paper for one year, it would be equal to having 5.551,566 cars taken off the road for one year!

Eating Your Veggies: Not As Good For You?
Eating Your Veggies: Not As Good For You?
Just what I've been researching. The declining nutrient value of our food, related to the declining health of our soil. Now, sound research to back it up! Hooray!
Why Recycle?
Recycling aluminum and steel cans directs valuable metal into new products, saving 95 percent of the energy required to manufacture aluminum from scratch and 74 percent of the energy needed to make steel.
See: The Aluminum Association
One hundred percent of a recycled aluminum can ends up as another aluminum can in as little as 60 days
An aluminum can has no limit to the number of times it can be recycled
Aluminum is the most recyclable of all materials: it is four times more valuable than other recycled consumer materials
Throwing away a single aluminum can is like pouring out six ounces of gasoline

Why?
I'm starting a why? series of blogs. Why should we change our habits? I find it easier to change if I know the consequences, particularly the beneficial consequences of my actions. So stay tuned as I discover why I (and maybe you) should change...
